Emerging Talent Voices Take the Spotlight in Adelaide Book Clubs

Book clubs and public readings in Adelaide have added three new series this month that focus on writers under 35, with the first events scheduled for July 18 at venues along North Terrace.

The shift comes as publishers report stronger sales for debut fiction from South Australian authors, a change driven by readers seeking stories rooted in local suburbs rather than imported titles.

Venues and programs drawing new crowds

Imprints Booksellers on Hindley Street now hosts a monthly emerging-writers night that pairs a short reading with discussion, while the State Library of South Australia on North Terrace runs a parallel club that meets in the glass atrium on the second Tuesday of each month. Both locations report walk-up attendance that has required extra seating since the start of the year.

Participants pay $12 for entry, which covers a printed excerpt and a non-alcoholic drink at the bar. The library program began its current run on 14 January 2026 and has maintained a waiting list of 40 names for each session.

Anyone wanting to attend the next reading at Imprints should arrive by 6:45 pm, as doors close once the 60-seat limit is reached. Writers interested in submitting work can email a 1,500-word sample to the library’s events team before 1 August for consideration in the August lineup.
