Adelaide's Top Arts Sites Extend Hours, Launch New Winter Exhibitions

Adelaide's major cultural venues extended their winter hours from July 1, with the Art Gallery of South Australia now open until 7pm on Thursdays and Fridays through September.

The shift aligns with higher interstate visitor numbers recorded in the June tourism report from the state government, which showed a 12 per cent rise in overnight stays compared with the same month last year. Local operators say the extra time allows day-trippers from Melbourne and Sydney to fit in evening programs without rushing between sites.

Key stops on North Terrace and Hindley Street

The Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace holds the current exhibition of colonial-era landscapes that runs until August 30, while the adjacent South Australian Museum offers free entry to its Aboriginal cultures gallery every day. A short walk west along the same street leads to the Adelaide Festival Centre, where the July program includes three new dance works performed in the Dunstan Playhouse. Further south on Hindley Street, the Mercury Cinema screens a rotating program of Australian documentaries each weekend, with tickets priced at $18 for adults.

Recent attendance data from the Adelaide Festival Centre shows 184,000 tickets sold in the first half of 2026, up from 162,000 in the same period of 2025. The state government allocated an extra $2.4 million this financial year to support regional touring of the same shows after the Adelaide season closes.

Getting around and planning ahead

Visitors arriving by train can use the free city connector tram that stops directly outside the North Terrace institutions. Advance bookings are required for the Thursday night talks at the Art Gallery, which fill within 48 hours of opening. The Adelaide Central Market on Gouger Street remains the most reliable spot for quick meals between venues, with most stalls open until 5.30pm on weekdays.
