Adelaide Council Turns to 2026 Election Preparations After By-law and Ward Updates

The City of Adelaide endorsed its 2024 By-laws on 27 August 2024, with those rules taking effect on 5 January 2025 and replacing earlier controls on moveable signs and local government land use. Council followed that step by adopting the Miscellaneous Amendment By-law 2025 on 22 April 2025, which appeared in the SA Government Gazette on 1 May 2025 and began operating on 1 September 2025.

By-law Changes Now in Force

These updates apply across Adelaide and North Adelaide, where the council represents 25,000 residents and 315,000 daily city users. The new regulations alter how signs can be placed and how land under council control may be used, requiring businesses and community groups to adjust practices that were governed by older rules.

A separate review examined 504 active confidentiality orders issued between May 2005 and October 2024 under Section 91(9) of the Local Government Act 1999. Sixteen of those orders were scheduled for partial or full release in December 2024, increasing public access to previously restricted council material.

Next Steps for Voters and Council

Results of the 2025 Central Ward supplementary election were confirmed at a special council meeting on 2 September 2025, after which three of the four newly elected members completed their prescribed declarations. That outcome altered the composition of the 11-councillor body ahead of the full 2026 election.

An educational campaign is now running to explain legislative changes that will affect voting in the 2026 City of Adelaide election. Residents can review the updated by-laws and released orders through the council's public documents portal to understand current requirements before the next poll.

Council meetings continue on the second and fourth Tuesday of most months, providing regular opportunities for public input on how the amended by-laws are applied in practice.
