Adelaide Advances Road, Rail and Health Infrastructure Through Targeted State Projects
Major investments focus on the North-South Corridor, hospital redevelopment and rail safety upgrades to support local connectivity.
How we reported this
Adelaide’s North-South Corridor T2D Project stands as a $15.4 billion initiative to deliver 78 km of non-stop motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga, including twin tunnels that will bypass 21 traffic lights.
North-South Corridor Motorway Works
The T2D Project forms the centrepiece of efforts to create continuous traffic-light-free travel along the corridor. Twin tunnels are planned to remove signalised intersections that currently slow movement between the northern and southern reaches of the metropolitan area.
Women’s and Children’s Hospital Redevelopment
A new $3.2 billion Women’s and Children’s Hospital is under construction at the SAPOL Barracks site. Completion is scheduled for the first half of 2025, shifting services to a purpose-built facility that replaces the existing hospital.
Adelaide Aquatic Centre Construction
The state-of-the-art Adelaide Aquatic Centre is being built in North Adelaide’s Park 2. The facility is due to open in summer 2025-26 and will include water slides and splash zones for public use.
Highway and Level Crossing Upgrades
From 2025-26 the state government has allocated $656.3 million to upgrade highways between the Swanport Bridge and Truro, allowing high-productivity vehicles to bypass metropolitan Adelaide. Separately, a $250 million level crossing removal at Curtis Road in Munno Para is funded over five years to separate road traffic from the Gawler passenger rail line and support regional housing development.
These projects together address longstanding constraints on road capacity, rail safety and health service delivery across northern and southern Adelaide. Construction timelines for the hospital and aquatic centre provide near-term milestones, while the corridor and highway works extend into the following years.
Further stages of the T2D Project and the Munno Para crossing removal will continue according to the published funding schedules and construction programs.
