Thebarton Oval's new synthetic pitches hosted four matches this week that ended with a combined 27 goals, capping the first full round on the resurfaced grounds.
Facility upgrades finished in late June after a $4.8 million state government allocation, and clubs booked slots immediately to test the surfaces before the main winter fixtures calendar fills. The timing matters because school programs shift to full use next month and the venues sit within a 15-minute drive of central Adelaide offices.
Matches at Thebarton Oval on Port Road and at the adjacent training fields on Kintore Avenue drew teams from the South Australian Amateur Soccer League and the Norwood Football Club development sides. Local organisers also ran a Thursday night under-18 showcase that doubled as a trial for the City of Adelaide's junior pathway program.
Attendance reached 1,450 on July 10 for the senior clash that finished 5-3, according to gate records from the venue trust. Entry stayed at the fixed $12 adult price set in the new booking system launched on July 1, while junior teams paid a flat $180 per hour for pitch hire.
Ground staff reported even ball roll and reduced stud wear after the first week of heavy use, with irrigation timers adjusted twice to counter the dry spell that began on July 5. The same crew will water the Kintore Avenue strip again on Monday morning before the next round of league games.
Clubs can lock in remaining slots through the City of Adelaide online portal or by calling the Thebarton Oval office before 4 pm on weekdays. Printed fixture sheets are also available at the front desk of the Prospect Sports Centre on Prospect Road for teams that prefer paper copies.
