Adelaide employers posted 2,800 new AI-related positions in the first half of 2026, up from 1,900 in the same period last year, according to state employment records released this week.
The increase comes as international operators accelerate plans for large-scale facilities that need engineers, data analysts and cybersecurity staff. Local firms now compete with interstate recruiters who offer higher salaries and remote options, tightening the pool of available talent in several neighbourhoods.
Construction crews broke ground on a 40-megawatt data centre at Lot Fourteen in March, creating immediate demand for on-site technicians and project managers. At the same time, the University of South Australia opened 120 new places in its applied AI certificate course based at the Mawson Lakes campus. Both sites sit within five kilometres of the city centre, allowing graduates to walk or cycle to interviews at nearby startups along Hindley Street.
Recruiters report that candidates with cloud certification now receive multiple offers within a fortnight, pushing starting salaries for junior roles above $95,000. Traditional sectors such as logistics and retail have lost mid-level staff to these openings, with several warehouses near Port Adelaide advertising retention bonuses to keep workers.
State government data released on 7 July recorded a 32 percent rise in technology vacancies across greater Adelaide compared with July 2025. The same report noted a 14 percent drop in applications per position for non-tech roles in hospitality and transport. Average rent for one-bedroom units near the innovation precinct climbed to $520 a week, reflecting the influx of new workers.
Employers who want to keep pace should list clear pathways for internal training and partner with the existing certificate programs at Mawson Lakes rather than relying solely on national job boards. Workers already in the market gain an edge by completing short modules at the Lot Fourteen hub before the next round of facility openings scheduled for late 2026.
