The State Theatre Company of South Australia opened its winter production of a new Australian work at the Dunstan Playhouse on July 8, with all 14 remaining performances through July 31 already sold out as of July 10.
Adelaide’s theater sector has seen steady recovery since earlier venue restrictions lifted, and the current cooler weather has pushed more residents toward indoor events rather than outdoor festivals that dominate the summer calendar. Local discussion has focused on whether this run marks a lasting uptick after several quieter months.
Performances are split between the Dunstan Playhouse inside the Adelaide Festival Centre on King William Road and the smaller Bakehouse Theatre on Payneham Road in Kent Town, where an independent company is staging a companion piece that shares thematic links with the main production. Both sites sit within easy reach of central tram stops, making them convenient for after-work audiences from the CBD and eastern suburbs.
Advance sales data released by the State Theatre Company shows 4,150 tickets purchased since bookings opened on June 22, a 28 percent increase compared with the equivalent period last year. Single tickets at the Dunstan Playhouse start at $42, while Bakehouse seats are priced from $35, with concessions available for holders of a valid Adelaide Metro card.
Any returns will be released through the State Theatre Company website on a first-come basis, and the company has scheduled an additional talkback session after the July 18 matinee at the Dunstan Playhouse. The next subscription season announcement is expected in early August, covering shows at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Grote Street.
