Between Kent Town and the eastern edge of Adelaide’s CBD, mental health resources have surged in both number and diversity over the past two years, marking a significant shift from clinical-only services to community-centred wellness programs.
With a rising awareness of mental health following the stresses of the pandemic and ongoing socioeconomic pressures, local governments and organisations are adapting to better serve the area’s mixed residential and commercial populations. This evolution is critical as South Australia seeks to reduce hospital admissions tied to mental health crises.
Two organisations at the forefront of this change are the Kent Town Community Wellness Centre on Dequetteville Terrace and the neighbouring Eastern Mental Health Collective (EMHC) housed in the former Norwood library building on Magill Road. The Wellness Centre, operated by AnglicareSA and relaunched in January 2025, now offers group sessions focusing on mindfulness, peer support meet-ups, and art therapy, complementing its traditional counselling services.
The EMHC, meanwhile, has embraced a broader definition of mental well-being with outdoor activities scheduled in nearby Rymill Park, where yoga and tai chi sessions occur on weekends, attracting residents from surrounding suburbs like Norwood and Stepney. Both centres collaborate monthly to ensure they cover gaps in service and provide referrals for specialised care when needed.
Data from the South Australian Health Department shows a 45% increase in appointments at Kent Town’s mental health facilities between early 2024 and mid-2026. Wait times for initial counselling appointments have been reduced from an average 10 weeks in late 2023 to 4 weeks currently, attributed to increased staffing and funding from the 2025 Mental Health Strategy budget.
Costs for group wellness sessions typically range from $10 to $25 per session, making them accessible to a broad demographic, including young adults and the elderly. The expanding range of affordable options aligns with findings from a 2025 survey by the University of Adelaide indicating most respondents preferred community-based support over clinical settings, citing stigma and convenience as major factors.
These developments coincide with a wider Adelaide metropolitan push to decentralise mental health resources, bringing help closer to where people live and work instead of centralising in hospitals or clinics.
Residents interested in accessing these services can contact the Kent Town Community Wellness Centre directly at (08) 8362 1234 or visit their offices at 45 Dequetteville Terrace from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. Information on upcoming group activities is also posted on local community noticeboards and the City of Adelaide’s official website.
As the landscape of mental health care shifts, Kent Town exemplifies how neighbourhood-level responses can evolve to meet diverse and growing needs effectively.
