Adelaide laneways gain year-round outdoor seating as council extends permits, reviving post-pandemic evening crowds

Adelaide City Council began issuing winter outdoor dining permits across the East End in May 2026, allowing heaters and windbreaks on Peel Street and Leigh Street until 11pm seven nights a week.

The move followed a sharp drop in foot traffic during the 2025 winter quarter, when many venues reported closures by 8pm. Council data showed average nightly visitors on those two blocks fell to 1,800 in July last year. Extended permits aim to lift that number by keeping tables occupied later.

Peel Street and Leigh Street changes

Peel Street now hosts six venues with permanent heater setups, including the wine bar at 20 Peel Street and the tapas spot at number 12. Leigh Street added four new licensed areas outside existing restaurants, with two-hour time limits on tables to encourage turnover. Both streets sit one block from Rundle Mall, giving office workers an easy walk after 5pm.

North Terrace tram stops recorded a 28 percent rise in evening alightings between May and June 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to Adelaide Metro figures. Average spend per diner at the new outdoor tables sits at $28, up from $19 last winter.

Practical steps for locals

Residents can check current heater locations and table availability on the Adelaide City Council website before heading out. Early bookings are recommended on Fridays, when Peel Street tables fill by 6:30pm. The permits run until September and will be reviewed for a possible permanent extension based on the winter trial numbers.
