Adelaide Expands Facilities Venues and Infrastructure Supporting Sport Locally

Adelaide City Council approved $4.8 million in capital works for sports infrastructure on 7 July, with the largest share going to resurfacing works at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre and lighting upgrades at the Thebarton Oval complex.

The timing aligns with record winter registrations across junior and senior competitions, which have risen steadily since the 2023 season and now require more reliable court and field access during peak evening hours.

Named sites receiving immediate attention

Work at Memorial Drive on War Memorial Drive will replace the six outer courts with a porous surface designed for Adelaide’s summer heat, while Thebarton Oval on South Road gains LED towers that meet Football South Australia broadcast standards. Both projects sit within walking distance of established clubs: the Memorial Drive site serves members of the Adelaide Lawn Tennis Club, and Thebarton supports the Western Strikers and several school programs from the inner west.

Separate funding also covers minor drainage repairs at the Park 21 sports fields on South Terrace, where cricket and Australian rules teams share space during the transition months of March and September.

Usage data and project timeline

City records show 187,000 individual bookings across council-managed ovals and courts in the 2025 calendar year, up 12 percent from 2024. The new works are scheduled for completion by December, with the Memorial Drive courts closing from 15 September to 30 November and Thebarton Oval lights due online before the December junior cricket season.
