Memorial Drive prodigy grabs national spotlight after weekend sweep

Seventeen-year-old Sophie Lang from Unley won both her singles and doubles matches on July 10 at the national junior series stop held at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre.

The results arrive days after Cruz Hewitt reached the Wimbledon boys final, lifting interest in South Australian tennis pathways that feed directly into events like the one at Memorial Drive.

Local programs feed the surge

Lang trains through the Tennis South Australia junior academy based at the Memorial Drive facility and also attends sessions run by the City of Unley recreation program at the nearby Unley Oval courts. Those two sites run coordinated schedules that let players move between high-performance drills and community matches without leaving the eastern suburbs.

Weekend attendance at Memorial Drive reached 2,400 on Saturday, up from 1,650 the previous year, according to centre records released on July 11.

Next steps for the player and the club

Lang is scheduled to play the final on July 13 at the same venue before returning to school commitments at Unley High. Tennis South Australia has already flagged her for the state squad that travels to Melbourne in August for the next series round.

Coaches at both the Memorial Drive academy and the Unley program say the current schedule leaves little room for rest, with daily court time booked through the end of the month and entry fees for the next local event set at $45 per player.
