Adelaide's amateur footy finals race heats up as SAFA season enters business end

The penultimate month of the South Australian Football Association season kicks off this weekend with six clubs locked in a battle for the four finals berths, and the gap between second and seventh is just one win.

Glenelg South holds top spot on 34 points after 14 rounds, but Fitzroy Community, Adelaide University, Edwardstown, Broadview and Hectorville are all within striking distance. With four games remaining before finals begin the first weekend of September, any of those six could finish inside or outside the four.

The SAFA, which runs amateur men's and women's divisions across 14 clubs, draws its largest crowds to fixtures at Park 12 on West Terrace and Park 17 on South Terrace, both in Adelaide's parklands, where Saturday's double-headers regularly exceed 500 spectators. The men's division averaged 68 goals a game across rounds 10 to 14, according to league data, up from 62 in the same period last year.

Edwardstown, last year's grand final loser, has the most favourable run home: three of its final four games are at its home base, Edwardstown Oval on South Road.

What's at stake

Fitzroy Community, sitting second on percentage, could clinch a finals berth as early as round 16 if it beats Broadview this Saturday at Park 12. Kick-off is 2:30 p.m. Broadview, in seventh spot, needs a win to keep its season alive, its remaining opponents include two of the current top three.

The SAFA finals series culminates in the grand final at Thebarton Oval on Saturday, September 12. Ticket prices for adults are $10 at the gate; children under 12 enter free. Parking is available on Sir Donald Bradman Drive and adjacent streets, though league officials advise arriving early, as Thebarton's 3,000-seat main stand typically fills by halftime.

The women's division, meanwhile, has been more clear-cut. Adelaide University has won 12 of its 14 games and sits eight points clear of second-placed Hectorville. If the students win this Saturday against Fitzroy Community at Park 17's western pitch, they can book a grand final spot a full fortnight before the preliminary final.

How to watch and what comes next

All remaining SAFA men's and women's home-and-away fixtures are scheduled for Saturday afternoons at the Park 12 and Park 17 complexes, with the occasional Sunday game at West Beach or Henley Memorial Oval. Full fixtures and live ladder updates are on the SAFA website.
