South Adelaide U16s take out state netball title in extra-time thriller

South Adelaide’s Under-16 netball side won the state championship on Tuesday night, defeating Norwood 47-44 in extra time at Priceline Stadium.

How the game unfolded

The Panthers led 24-18 at half-time, but Norwood clawed back level at 41-41 by the end of regulation. South Adelaide scored six of the game’s final nine goals in extra time to seal the win.

The result caps a season in which South Adelaide finished second on the ladder with a 10-4 record. Norwood, minor premiers after going 12-2, entered the final as favourites. Netball South Australia confirmed attendance at the showcase final was 1,270.

Why this result matters now

The win comes amid a wider renewed focus on junior development pathways in South Australian netball. Netball SA announced last month it would upgrade coach education programs at the district level, and increased funding for regional talent identification days. Officials have said participation numbers in the under-16 age group have risen 12 per cent over the past two seasons.

Several players from both sides have been invited to Netball SA’s Emerging Talent Squad trials later this month. The squad feeds into the state under-17 program and, ultimately, the Adelaide Thunderbirds’ development pathways.

What happens next

The state under-17 championships begin on August 3 at Priceline Stadium and Adelaide Showground. South Adelaide’s under-17 side, which includes seven players from the championship-winning under-16 team, will be one of the teams to beat.

For players aiming higher, the Netball SA Emerging Talent trials are scheduled for July 22 and July 23 at the State Netball Centre at Mile End. Nominations close on July 18.
