Adelaide United's Nestory Irankunda heads to Bayern Munich as A-League faces strike threat

Nestory Irankunda, the 20-year-old Adelaide United winger who became a poster boy for the club's youth academy, has officially completed his transfer to Bayern Munich this week, landing in Germany on Monday to join the Bundesliga giants for pre-season.

The move makes Irankunda the highest-profile Adelaide United export since Craig Goodwin's stints in Europe, and arrives at a moment when Australian football is scrambling to sustain the glow from the national team's run to the World Cup semi-finals in the United States.

From southern suburbs to Allianz Arena

Irankunda, who grew up in the Adelaide suburb of Para Hills, signed for Adelaide United's youth system at age 13 and broke into the senior side in 2022. His 12 goals and eight assists in 48 A-League appearances drew scouts from across Europe, with Bayern paying an undisclosed transfer fee believed to be around $3.5 million, a record for an A-League sale.

The winger's first training session with Bayern's first team is scheduled for Wednesday at the club's Säbener Straße complex in Munich. Irankunda told reporters at Adelaide Airport before departing that he was "nervous but excited" to test himself at a club that has won six Champions League titles.

Adelaide United coach Carl Veart declined to comment on the transfer this week, saying only that the club's focus was on preparing for the new A-League season, which is due to kick off in October. Veart has promoted 17-year-old winger Musa Toure from the youth ranks to fill Irankunda's spot on the right flank.

Clouds over the new season

The transfer comes as the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) union ballots A-League players on strike action over a new collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expired on June 30, and talks with the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) have stalled over revenue sharing and minimum wages.

If players vote to strike, the start of the 2026-27 A-League season could be delayed beyond the scheduled October 17 kick-off, threatening the momentum generated by the Socceroos' World Cup semi-final run last month. Attendances averaged 14,200 across the A-League last season, up eight per cent from the previous year, but industry sources say the gains could evaporate if a protracted labour dispute sours fan sentiment.

Adelaide United's first home game of the new season is slated for Saturday, October 24, against Melbourne Victory at Coopers Stadium in Hindmarsh. The club is expected to announce ticket pricing for the match next week.
