Over 700 students from 25 high schools attended the Heart of the Community Sport Volunteer Expo in Adelaide to explore pathways into community sport and major events. The gathering highlighted how clubs across South Australia are drawing on new volunteers to sustain and grow their operations.
The SA Government committed $1 million to expand the Student Volunteer Award Program. Year 11 students can now earn SACE credits for roles in coaching, officiating, administration and media. This structure gives clubs a steady supply of trained helpers while students gain recognised experience that supports long-term involvement in local sport.
Over $5.6 million was awarded to 31 grassroots sport projects under the 2024-25 Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program. Funding supports upgrades such as cricket nets, tennis courts and accessible changerooms in Adelaide suburbs. These improvements allow clubs to host more youth teams and run inclusive sessions that keep families engaged.
The $2.4 million Active State program directs resources toward youth engagement. One example is the Active Youth program in Port Lincoln for disengaged teens, alongside training to support children with neurodivergence. Clubs benefit from these targeted efforts as they reach participants who might otherwise stay on the sidelines.
A partnership between the Department for Child Protection and the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing supplies hundreds of tickets to AFL and Netball games for children in care. Adelaide Football Club and Port Adelaide Football Club lead ticket distribution. The arrangement links clubs with broader community networks and encourages ongoing participation beyond single events.
These measures focus on practical support for clubs rather than short-term events. Continued coordination between government programs and local organisations will determine how widely the benefits extend in coming seasons.
