South Australia launched a major push in May 2026 to attract young sport volunteers, with over 700 students attending the Heart of the Community Sport Volunteer Expo in Adelaide to explore pathways into community sport and major events like the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup.
The SA Government committed $1 million to expand the Student Volunteer Award Program. Year 11 students can now receive SACE credits for volunteer work in coaching, officiating, and event operations. This expansion directly links school assessment to practical roles in local clubs and events, giving participants a structured way to begin without prior experience.
A $5.6 million grant package under the 2024-25 Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program is upgrading grassroots facilities across Adelaide. Specific projects include new cricket nets for the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and court resurfacing for Adelaide’s Denman Tennis Club. These improvements lower barriers for new participants by providing better local training spaces.
The $2.4 million Active State program specifically targets youth engagement. It backs initiatives such as an Active Youth program in Port Lincoln for disengaged teens and training resources to support children with neurodivergence. Port Adelaide Athletics’ Yartapuulti Squad, operating since 2016, continues to offer exercise sessions to the local Aboriginal community and has won championships and community achievement awards.
Students can start by inquiring at their school about the expanded Student Volunteer Award Program for SACE credit opportunities. Families can explore local clubs in areas such as Port Adelaide that already run established squads or use upgraded facilities like those at Denman Tennis Club. The Active State initiatives provide additional entry routes for teens needing tailored support.
