Winter school holidays: family-friendly activities to beat the July chill in Adelaide

The South Australian Museum on North Terrace is running its annual "Winter Wonders" series through to July 18. Sessions include fossil digs, insect encounters and a behind-the-scenes tour of the taxidermy collection, all free with museum entry. Nearby, the Art Gallery of South Australia has a dedicated family studio open daily from 10am to 4pm, where children can create artworks inspired by the current exhibition of Indigenous fibre art.

At the Adelaide Botanic Garden, the "Winter Lights" installation has been extended until July 19, offering a free after-dark walk through illuminated glasshouses and tree canopies. Garden staff said the display drew more than 8,000 visitors in its first weekend alone.

Indoor markets and libraries

The Adelaide Central Market is running a "Kids' Kitchen" program on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, where children aged 5 to 12 can learn to make pasta and pizza from scratch with local chefs. Sessions cost $15 per child and include a tasting plate. The market's management said bookings were almost full for this week but a few spots remained for the Thursday session.

Public libraries across the city are also stepping in. The City of Adelaide's library network is hosting free Lego club sessions, coding workshops and storytime events at the Hutt Street, North Adelaide and City branches. The most popular event this week has been the "Winter Wildlife" animal encounter at the Hutt Street Library on Thursday at 2pm, featuring lizards, snakes and a sugar glider from the Adelaide Animal Encounters organisation.

For families willing to travel a little further, the South Australian Whale Centre in Victor Harbor is running daily dolphin and whale talks through July, following recent reports of increased dolphin deaths in the region linked to a major algal bloom that has affected food sources. While the topic is somber, the centre's educators are framing it as a conservation lesson for older children.

Practical advice for parents: book ahead for ticketed events, as several sessions have already sold out. Free activities like the Botanic Garden lights and library programs do not require reservations, but arriving early is recommended.
