Adelaide City Council installed 12 heated dining enclosures along Hindley Street and Rundle Street on 1 June 2026, each fitted with portable gas heaters and wind barriers that seat up to eight people.

The enclosures address the drop in foot traffic that usually hits the CBD between May and August, when average daytime temperatures fall to 15 degrees. Residents who once stayed indoors now book tables outside because the pods keep the space above 20 degrees even after sunset.

Named venues already using the structures

The Crown & Anchor on Grenfell Street converted two of its footpath tables into an enclosure last week, while the Adelaide Central Market added three pods outside its Gouger Street entrance for vendors selling hot soup and mulled wine. Both sites report steady bookings from groups who previously met at home.

Local data from the council shows a 38 percent rise in outdoor table reservations at participating venues during the first four weeks of the program compared with the same period in 2025. Average spend per person sits at $42, up from $31 last winter, according to point-of-sale figures supplied by eight restaurants.

Practical steps for residents this month

Bookings open each Monday at 9am through the council website for the following weekend, with most pods reserved within two hours. Visitors should bring a light jacket for the short walk between enclosures and nearby tram stops on North Terrace.

Those planning a visit can start at the Central Market for an early coffee, move to a pod on Hindley Street for lunch, then finish at the Botanic Garden winter lights display that runs until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The program runs through 31 August, after which the enclosures will be stored for next season.
