From this weekend, the Adelaide Botanic Garden will charge $22 for adult entry to its Winter Lights trail, with tickets required in advance through the official website or at the North Terrace gate.

The change arrives as visitor numbers at city green spaces climb during the cooler months, when families seek indoor and outdoor options that avoid summer heat. Council data shows a 19 per cent rise in July attendance last year, prompting tighter management of capacity and revenue to cover lighting and security costs.

Named venues and booking details

Two central locations drive the new requirements. At the Adelaide Botanic Garden on North Terrace, timed slots run from 5.30pm each evening until 9pm, with last entry at 8pm. The Adelaide Central Market on Gouger Street has introduced a separate $8 weekend wristband for its evening food stalls, sold only at the main entrance or via the market app. Both sites accept contactless payment only and limit group sizes to eight.

Transport adds further expense. Metro Adelaide recorded a 12 per cent increase in rail patronage to the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights last winter. A day pass now costs $11.40, while parking at the nearby Frome Street multi-storey rises to $18 after 4pm on weekends.

Practical steps before heading out

Check the Botanic Garden website by Thursday evening for remaining slots, as same-day sales end once capacity hits 1,200 visitors. Download the Central Market app to secure wristbands and avoid queues at Gouger Street. Pack layers for temperatures that drop to single digits after sunset and carry a reusable cup, since several stalls now charge 50 cents extra for single-use items. Arrive at least 30 minutes early for security screening at both sites.
