Adelaide’s winter arts season heats up with new exhibitions, live music and theatre

Adelaide’s arts calendar is packed through late July, with a wave of exhibitions, live performances and music events drawing locals and visitors into the city’s cultural precincts.

The winter season traditionally sees a lull after the Adelaide Festival and Fringe, but this year venues across the CBD, North Terrace and the inner suburbs are hosting a broad mix of programming. Gallery openings, independent theatre and curated live music series are all running through the school holidays and beyond.

Visual arts and gallery shows

The Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace has extended its major summer exhibition into winter, drawing strong crowds. Meanwhile, the South Australian Museum is hosting a First Nations-led exhibition that opened in early July, featuring contemporary works from across the state. Both venues are open daily, with free entry for most permanent collections.

Smaller commercial galleries in the East End and around Rundle Street are rotating new shows weekly. Several have coordinated late-night openings on Fridays, with wine and food specials from nearby restaurants.

Over at the Adelaide Festival Centre, a new photography installation exploring urban life in Adelaide’s northern suburbs opened last week. The exhibition runs until August 10, with guided tours every Saturday afternoon.

Live music and theatre

Live music is booming across the city. The Crown and Anchor Hotel on Grenfell Street continues its weekly lineup of local and touring acts, with shows most nights from 8pm. The Gov on Port Road has a string of national touring acts booked through the end of the month, including indie rock and folk performers. Tickets range from $25 to $60, with many shows selling out in advance.

At the State Theatre Company South Australia, the production of a new Australian play opened to strong reviews at the Odeon Theatre in Norwood. The run continues until July 30, with evening performances Tuesday through Saturday. The company is also offering discounted preview tickets for students and concession card holders.

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is performing a winter concert series at the Town Hall on King William Street, featuring works by Mozart and contemporary Australian composers. The next performance is Saturday, July 18, at 7:30pm. Tickets start at $49.

What’s next

Looking ahead, the Adelaide Film Festival announces its full program in early August, with screenings scheduled for October. The Adelaide Writers’ Week has already confirmed several international authors for its March 2027 program. For now, most venues recommend booking ahead online, especially for weekend performances and special exhibitions. Several galleries are open until 9pm on Thursdays, and many offer free guided tours on weekends.
