Midwinter family fun: Where to take the kids in Adelaide this July

Adelaide families looking for something to do this mid-July have plenty of options, and not all of them involve braving the cold. With the school holidays rolling on and the city's cultural calendar in full swing, we've rounded up a handful of activities that work for toddlers, teens and everyone in between.

The winter break is always a juggling act for parents. Public programs at museums and libraries tend to fill up fast, so booking ahead is key. But there are also drop-in options that don't require a reservation, including free storytime sessions at several local libraries and pop-up craft stations at shopping centres.

Science, stories and soft play

The South Australian Museum on North Terrace runs its regular Discovery Centre sessions through the holidays, where children can handle real fossils and specimens. Entry is free for kids, and the centre opens daily from 10am to 4pm. Over on North Adelaide, the State Library of South Australia is hosting its July School Holiday program with themed craft and storytelling sessions; most are free but require online registration through the library's website.

The Adelaide Zoo on Frome Road has its winter keeper talks running daily at 11am and 2pm, giving families a behind-the-scenes look at animal feeding routines. Tickets for children aged 4 to 14 cost $23.50, while adults pay $40.50; annual pass holders get in free. Monarto Safari Park, about 70 kilometres east of the city, offers guided bus tours through its open-range exhibits, but those tickets often sell out on weekends, so booking online at least two days ahead is recommended.

For littler kids who just want to burn off energy, the Gymnastics SA School Holiday Fun program at the State Sports Park in Gepps Cross runs 90-minute supervised sessions for children aged 2 to 12. Sessions cost $15 per child and take place every Tuesday and Thursday until July 17.

Markets, movies and making things

The Adelaide Central Market on Gouger Street is always a reliable bet. On Saturday mornings, the market runs its free Kids' Creative Corner from 9am to noon, where children can decorate their own tote bags or build veggie-stamp artworks. No booking is needed, though supplies are limited to the first 50 children.

Cinema chains across the suburbs, including Palace Nova in Prospect and Hoyts in Tea Tree Plaza, are running their school holiday film programs. Palace Nova's Cine Kids series screens family-friendly films every weekday morning at 10am, with tickets at $10 for children and $14 for adults. Hoyts' School Holiday Kids Club offers $9 tickets for select screenings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

The Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace has its free Art Lab sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am to 1pm, where children aged 5 to 12 can experiment with clay, paint and collage. The gallery also runs a self-guided family trail that leads visitors through the permanent collection; activity sheets are available at the front desk.

For families willing to venture a few kilometres out of the city, the Handorf Winter Festival at the German settlement's main hall is running until July 19. Tickets are $12 for children and $18 for adults, covering entry to the indoor ice-skating rink and a hot chocolate voucher. Sessions run hourly from 10am to 5pm, and ice-skating takes place on a synthetic rink, no snow required.

One practical note: Many of these programs quote capacity limits and fill up quickly. Parents are advised to check websites or call ahead before driving across town. The July school holidays run until July 20, so there is still time to fit in a few outings before the term starts again.
