The 2026-2027 water sports season in Adelaide is set to kick off on September 1, with the finals of the South Australian Swimming Championships scheduled to take place at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre on October 15-17.
This season matters now because Adelaide is home to a thriving aquatic community, with numerous clubs, schools, and organisations offering programs and competitions for all ages and skill levels. The city's strong focus on water sports is reflected in its world-class facilities, such as the Adelaide Aquatic Centre on Rudd Street and the Unley Swimming Centre on Ethel Street. With the Australian swimming team still reeling from the recent World Cup, local athletes will be looking to make a splash and bring home some much-needed medals.
In Adelaide, several organisations are working together to promote and develop water sports. The South Australian Swimming Association, based in the suburb of Unley, offers a range of programs and services, including coaching, officiating, and athlete development. Meanwhile, the Adelaide University Swimming Club, which trains at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, has produced several national champions and Olympic athletes. Other popular swimming spots in Adelaide include the Glenelg Beach, where the Glenelg Swimming Club is based, and the West Lakes shore, which is home to the West Lakes Swimming Club.
According to data from the South Australian Swimming Association, there are currently over 10,000 registered swimmers in the state, with 500 clubs and schools offering swimming programs. The upcoming South Australian Swimming Championships are expected to attract over 1,000 competitors, with entry fees ranging from $10 to $50 per event. The championships will feature a total of 50 events, including the 50m and 100m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. The events will be held in a 50m outdoor pool, with electronic timing and a grandstand seating capacity of 1,200 spectators.
As the season heats up, local athletes will be focusing on the upcoming Australian Age Championships, which will take place in Brisbane from April 12-18, 2027. The championships will feature over 1,500 competitors from across the country, with entry fees ranging from $20 to $100 per event. Adelaide athletes will be looking to make a strong showing, with several local swimmers having already qualified for the championships. With the season preview finals focus in full swing, now is the time for Adelaide's water sports enthusiasts to get involved and cheer on their local athletes.
