Adelaide shoppers filled stalls at the Central Market on Gouger Street and the Showgrounds Farmers Market in Wayville this week for broccoli, cauliflower and citrus priced between $2 and $4 per item.
Recession fears have eased in recent weeks, yet many households still watch weekly food costs closely after house prices doubled over the past decade.
The Central Market on Gouger Street opens daily and features growers from the Adelaide Plains and Riverland regions, while the Showgrounds Farmers Market in Wayville operates every Saturday morning from 7am and draws producers from the Barossa and Hills districts.
Cauliflower, broccoli and oranges are at peak supply now, along with carrots, potatoes and kale that hold well in cooler months. Vendors at both sites report steady demand for these items because they require minimal preparation and pair easily with local proteins.
Market records from the Adelaide Produce Association show average prices for root vegetables fell 18 percent between July 2025 and this month, with a two-kilogram bag of carrots listed at $3.50 on 7 July 2026.
Arrive before 9am on Saturdays at the Showgrounds site to secure the best selection, and carry a reusable bag to handle purchases from multiple growers. Shoppers can combine a market trip with a walk along the nearby Linear Park trail or a stop at the Botanic Gardens to keep activity levels steady after buying fresh stock.
Check stall listings online the night before and note any specials on bulk greens to stretch household budgets through the rest of the month.
