Three schools in Adelaide's western suburbs introduced five-minute mindfulness routines for students in years 3 to 6 on 1 July.
Student anxiety referrals to school counsellors rose 22 percent in the 2025 school year, according to Department for Education figures released in May. Teachers report that brief daily pauses help children settle before literacy blocks and after recess. The timing aligns with the end of term two reporting and the push for wellbeing checks before mid-year holidays.
Glenelg Primary School on Brighton Road runs the Calm Kids SA package, which trains classroom teachers to lead guided breathing before morning lessons. Sessions use a simple script and a chime rather than screens. Parkside Primary School near the southern edge of the Adelaide Park Lands offers a parallel program through the same provider, with an added mindful walking loop along Linear Park on Fridays. Both sites pay $180 per class for the eight-week term package that includes teacher resources and one parent information night.
A University of South Australia evaluation of 420 students across six Adelaide schools last year found average anxiety scores dropped 18 percent after eight weeks of twice-daily practice. The same report noted attendance improved by an average of 1.4 days per term in participating classes. Central Market stalls have supplied fruit for post-session snacks at both Glenelg and Parkside under a small sponsorship from the Adelaide City Council wellbeing fund.
Parents can ask their child's teacher or deputy principal whether the school has booked the Calm Kids SA trainer for term three. Several eastern suburbs schools have waiting lists that opened this week. Families without a school program can join free Saturday morning taster sessions at the Botanic Gardens education centre on North Terrace, where instructors adapt the same breathing exercises for mixed-age groups.
