Bars and Nightlife in Adelaide: Rundle Street, Peel Street and the City Laneways
Adelaide has a bar scene that has improved dramatically over the past decade following liquor licence reforms, developing from a pub-and-RSL culture to one of Australia's best small-bar cities. Peel Street in the CBD has become one of Adelaide's most celebrated bar precincts, with a run of intimate, character-filled small bars in a laneway setting. Rundle Street east of the CBD and the East End precinct have a broader restaurant and bar strip with more variety. Leigh Street and Hindley Street cover the late-night and live music end of the spectrum. Norwood's Parade has a well-developed bar culture for the inner eastern suburbs. O'Connell Street in North Adelaide has neighbourhood bars adjacent to its restaurant strip. The Adelaide Central Market area and the Gouger Street precinct have evolved bar culture alongside the food scene. Adelaide's SALA visual arts festival (August) and the Adelaide Fringe (February-March) transform the city's entertainment energy considerably; both are good introductions to the bar and live performance scene for new residents.
